LITIGATION EXPERIENCE

Trial/Dispute Resolution Experience:

  • Member of trial team in a six week trial before a Supreme Court appointed Special Master in a water rights dispute between Georgia and Florida. Florida was seeking an equitable order constraining Georgia’s water use. We obtained a complete verdict in favor of Georgia that was subsequently affirmed by the Supreme Court.
  • First-chaired mediation of a construction dispute between the owner/general contractor against the architect for a senior assisted living facility. Secured a favorable mediator’s report, which all parties ultimately accepted, awarding client approximately 75% of damages sought.

Other Litigation Experience:

  • Successfully defendant a $240 million claim in New York state court against multiple large investment banks against a motion to dismiss and subsequent appeal of the denial of the motion to dismiss.
  • Successfully defended a multimillion claim in California federal court against a mortgage servicer’s motion to dismiss.
  • Successfully preserved a $20 million settlement in a dissolution of a family trust from a collateral attack by non-signatory children of two of the settling parties.

Pro Bono Experience

  • Member of a trial team that obtained a complete plaintiff’s verdict in RLUIPA litigation. We secured recognition of our client’s religion within the Virgnia Department of Corrections, overcoming prior Fourth Circuit precedent that had allowed the state to treat the group as a gang instead of a religious group.
